Cindy Wulbern is a Performance Improvement Analyst for Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc., which is one of the largest providers of outpatient surgery in the United States. Based in Deerfield, Illinois, the company has a network of more than 200 ambulatory surgery centers located in 35 states.

After 7 years as a radiology coder, Cindy was hired as an ambulatory surgery center coder in 2000 and has been with SCA since, specializing in urology, multi-specialty and interventional radiology/cardiovascular coding. During her career Cindy earned her RHIT AHIMA credential as well as several AAPC credentials including COSC, CASCC, CUC and CIRCC.

Cindy, along with her teammates in the Performance Improvement department, provides education and training in all specialties for remote coders employed by SCA. Cindy also spoke at the ASCA Winter Seminar held in San Diego, CA. Cindy resides in Jacksonville, FL.

Paula Vandenberg has 27 years of experience working in/with ASC’s. She worked at a HealthSouth ASC as a receptionist starting in 1995 and was promoted to coding in 2001. She became Certified Professional Coder in 2002, a Certified Outpatient Coder in 2003, and a Certified Inpatient Coder in 2015.

Paula has over 20 years of experience coding spinal surgeries and is a member of the North American Spine Society. She is currently working as a Performance Improvement analyst for SCA Health - Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc., which is one of the largest providers of outpatient surgery in the United States and has a network of over 200 ASCs. Along with her teammates in the Performance Improvement Department, she provides education, training, and coding support in the specialty of spinal and neurosurgery procedures for remote coders employed by SCA Health.

Debra Stinchcomb has over 30 years of health care experience including development, clinical, administrative, operations and sales. The last 23 years have been focused exclusively in the ASC industry.

Her responsibilities have included budget development/management, revenue/expense management, contract negotiation, licensing/certification/accreditation compliance, marketing, risk management, quality improvement and benchmarking.

Debra is a Registered Nurse having received her BSN and MBA. She is the founder/past President of Arkansas Ambulatory Surgery Association and has served nationally as a past board member of FASA and the ASC Association. She is currently the past President of the Arkansas Ambulatory Surgery Association. She received her CASC credential in 2002.

Debra was an AAAHC surveyor 2001 - 2007 and is Past Chair of the Ambulatory Joint Commission Professional and Technical Advisory Committee.

Debra participates on Quality Committee of ASCA as well as the BASC Board.

I am a Texas native with 10 years of hospital coding experience in both inpatient and outpatient covering a multitude of specialties including pain management. I had a brief flirtation with pro-fee coding where I learned facility coding is my true passion.

David Shapiro, M.D. is an anesthesiologist from Florida who has had extensive experience serving as a department chair, medical director, and board member of several ambulatory surgery centers. Dr. Shapiro currently serves on the Boards of both the Florida Society of Ambulatory Surgery Centers (FSASC) and the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA) and is a Past President of ASCA. Additionally, he is the Chair of the Board of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), an organization for which he also conducts healthcare facility surveys on behalf of AAAHC and Medicare.

Dr. Shapiro is also on the Board of the Ambulatory Surgery Center Quality Collaboration (ASC QC), which develops, measures, and publicly reports national ASC quality data. Further, he serves on the Board of the Facility Guidelines Institute (FGI) and participates as a member of their Health Guidelines Review Committee (HGRC).

Mary learned to scrub while in Nursing school at the University of Iowa and has remained in the perioperative field ever since. Early in her nursing career, she was appointed the Director of Nursing role for a startup surgery center and accepted the Administrator position in 2001. Mary held positions such as Regional Manager and Clinical Consultant for Health Inventures. She assisted start up centers as they became certified, helped others achieve or maintain accreditation. Additionally, Mary has served as a Group Clinical Director for Surgical Care Affiliates responsible for the clinical results for 18 centers.

She currently is a Senior Consultant for Amblitel. Mary was one of the founding members of the Iowa ASC Association and served as the first President. Mary currently serves on the Board of Ambulatory Surgery Certification (BASC) and is one of the speakers for the Management Essentials for ASC Administrator course.

Kara Marshall Newbury serves as director, government affairs and regulatory counsel for the Ambulatory Surgery Center Association (ASCA), and through these roles spearheads ASCA’s federal advocacy efforts. Kara previously coordinated state legislative, regulatory and public affairs for the association. Before joining ASCA, Kara served as the assistant director, state government affairs at the National Association of Professional Employer Organizations and staff attorney and director of government relations for the Community Financial Services Association. Kara received her undergraduate and law degree from The Ohio State University.

Vontresa Moses is a seasoned coding professional holding certifications with the AAPC to include the CPC, COC, CPMA, CPC-I, and CASCC credentials. She currently works with Tenet Healthcare and United Surgical Partners as Director of Coding Compliance. She has been employed with USPI for 23 years and has spent the majority of her tenure as an ASC coding professional. Her practical experience includes working in the role of a coder, auditor, educator, and currently as Director of Coding Compliance.

She leads remote teams of both ambulatory surgical center coders and hospital inpatient and outpatient coders. Vontresa also actively engages with facility leaders and physicians, successfully presenting gastroenterology coding guidelines to both audiences. Her experience in gastroenterology coding and effective writing skills have proven as invaluable tools in maintaining coding compliance within her organization. She enjoys photography and spending time with her husband and 2 kids in her spare time.

Colleen Moore became Certified Medical Assistant in 1983 and a Certified Professional Coder with AAPC in 1998. Colleen has experience working in OB/GYN, ENT, general practice-urgent care, physical therapy, and 13 years experience working in orthopedic surgery. She also worked in an Healthsouth ASC as a surgery scheduler and coder from 1998 to 2002.

In 2003, Colleen Moore moved to Performance Improvement Analyst for SCA Health - Surgical Care Affiliates, Inc., which is one of the largest providers of outpatient surgery in the United States. John Goehle is the Chief Operating Officer and partner with Ambulatory Healthcare Strategies, LLC - a Rochester, New York-based ASC management and consulting services company.

Prior to forming AHS, Mr. Goehle developed and managed two Rochester New York-based ambulatory surgery centers and provided management consulting services for a wide range of health care organizations, primarily in the Northeast.

Mr. Goehle has a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh Scotland, and a Bachelor of Science Degree in Accounting from Ithaca College in Upstate New York. He holds the prestigious Certified Administrator Surgery Center (CASC) credential. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of New York. Mr. Goehle is also an accreditation surveyor with the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Healthcare (AAAHC).

Mr. Goehle is the host of the ASC Podcast with John Goehle available on iTunes and Google Play. He is also a frequent speaker on health care finance, technology and administration and has authored or co-authored eight books related to the ASC Industry including Ambulatory Surgery Center Governance - A Guide for Ambulatory Surgery Center Owners & Governing Body Members and The Survey Guide for ASCs – A Guide to the CMS Conditions of Coverage & Interpretive Guidelines for Ambulatory Surgery Centers. He is a former board member with the Federated Ambulatory Surgery Association and one of the founders of the New York State Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers.

Michelle George is Vice President of Clinical Services with Surgical Care Affiliates. Michelle has over 35 years of experience as a registered nurse. She has worked in various areas of nursing including critical care, emergency and trauma, and surgical services. Michelle has served in multiple hospital and ambulatory surgical center leadership roles, served on professional advisory boards, as affiliate faculty to a nursing program and professional speaker to professional and state healthcare organizations. She has authored various nursing journal articles and been contributing author to a healthcare textbook.

Michelle completed a Master’s in Nursing Administration program at San Diego State University and holds a Certified Administrator Surgery Center certification. She serves on the ASCA Education Committee, is a past-president for ASC Quality Collaboration Board of Directors and is the immediate past President for California Ambulatory Surgery Association.

Rebecca began in ASC leadership as Business Director for two high volume, multi-specialty surgery centers in south Florida. Rebecca joined SurgCenter Development in 2008 as Director of A/R & Materials where she worked to help develop over 20 ASCs. Rebecca then went on to become VP, Revenue Cycle & Managed Care Contracting for a surgery center/surgical hospital management company directing a CBO for its 18+ Clients. As a founding partner of NSN Revenue Resources, Rebecca served as President and built an unmatched team with diversified experience serving over 100 clients.

In January 2021, Rebecca joined USPI as Vice President, Revenue Cycle Operations, overseeing revenue cycle services provided to 210+ ASCs. In this role, Rebecca is focused on developing operational strategy, seeking and embracing innovation, and leveraging organizational culture to continuously improve outcomes for clients.

Marcus Crider is a partner with Waller Lansden and chair of the firm’s Labor & Employment practice group. A broad range of companies – from some of the world's largest employers in healthcare, manufacturing, transportation, and retail/hospitality, to start-ups and family-owned businesses – rely on Marcus to defend them in labor and employment matters. Marcus’s experience includes numerous jury trials involving claims of discrimination and retaliation in violation of federal and state laws. He has tried cases before the National Labor Relations Board and has arbitrated over fifty labor law cases, as well as arbitrations administered by FINRA, AAA, AHLA and JAMS. For many years, Chambers USA and Best Lawyers have recognized Marcus as a leader in his field, including in 2020 when he was named Tennessee lawyer of the year for labor and employment. He earned his J.D. from the University of Arkansas (Go Hogs!) and his undergraduate degree from Northwestern Louisiana State University (Fork ‘em Demons!).

Paul has obtained a high level of coding expertise through extensive research and experience within the ASC community. In addition to being a published author with articles featured in AAPC Coding Edge, Becker’s ASC Review, Paul currently hosts all mdStrategies coding webinars, and is a featured presenter at AAPC state and chapter conferences as well as state ASC association meetings providing training to ASC management companies and owners.

Kathy has been a perioperative nurse/manager/director for more than 30 years. The biggest change to her career was when she became a patient after an elective surgery went wrong. After 6 months of recuperation during which she experienced sepsis, a wound vac, physical therapy, home health, 4 surgeries (2 of them emergent) and 2 non-emergent surgeries, she has come out on the other side with a renewed passion for patient care and the care of their families. Cristina Bentin, CMA, CPPM, CCS-P, COC, is the president of Coding Compliance Management, LLC, a healthcare consulting company specializing in Ambulatory Surgery Centers with emphasis on business operations assessments, revenue cycle audits, HIPAA training, and daily coding support. Ms. Bentin is recognized as an ASC revenue cycle educator, speaker, and writer with over 29+ years of hands-on experience in ASC multi-specialty facility and physician office revenue cycle operations. Cristina's expertise extends to her involvement in federal fraud investigations to include her role as expert witness. Cristina currently serves on ASCA's education and programs committee.

I've been with the state of Missouri since 1990. I've visited many types of healthcare facilities during that time including hospitals, ambulatory surgical centers, dialysis facilities, mammography providers, and others. For the survey process, I've done many portions of the survey process with a major portion of the survey being for Life Safety. Along with Life Safety, my responsibilities include governing body, radiology, medical staff, and often quality assurance. Many of our providers have both state and federal regulations.

Kayci Hoover-Doss began her career with the Department of Health and Senior Services in 2014. In 2021, she joined the Department and CMS as a Life Safety Code Specialist (Surveyor) and Certified Fire Inspector I. Prior to becoming a Surveyor, her background included working in the Health Education Unit as a Senior Office Support Assistant for a year, promoted to the Administrative Office Support Assistant for three years, and promoted to a Health Program Representative I/II to the Certificate of Need Program for three years. Kayci resides in her hometown with her husband, Brian, of four years and three children, 18, 11, and 8.

Jeremy is the Life Safety Manager on the Enterprise Team for SCA Health. He comes to this position from being a certified surgical tech, Facility Engineer, and Life Safety Officer. In a short time he has become one of the experts in ASC EOC/ Life Safety with his involvement with NFPA and ASHE. He is on both voting boards for NFPA and ASHRAE for new standards and addendums.

Richard was hired in August 2022 to the role of Associate Director for Life Safety and Physical Environment. He has oversight responsibility for these areas and for Emergency Management requirements for all ACHC Accreditation programs.

Before joining ACHC, Richard had worked in hospitals since 1997 and held department responsibilities in engineering, construction, security, environmental services, food and nutrition services, patient transport, laundry and linen services, and communications. His range of experience makes him ideally suited to provide standards interpretation, post-survey support, and client education.

Richard received the Healthcare Facility Manager Certification (CHFM) in 2001. In 2017, he earned NFPA's Certified Life Safety Specialist for Health Care Certification (CLSS-HC). Richard is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives (FACHE) and a Fellow of the American Society for Health Care Engineering (FASHE).

Richard earned an MBA from Belhaven University.

After leaving Florida State University (Economics/Public Administration), Frank followed his passion and became a firefighter with the North Naples Fire Department. After 10 years of serving the public, he sustained a back injury which led him to an early retirement. This did not deter him from what he knew and loved, helping people and the fire service. He obtained certifications as a fire inspector and fire investigator on his way to a new chapter with Florida’s Agency for Health Care Administration (AHCA). For eight years, Frank served as a Fire Protection Specialist (life safety surveyor) for the state of Florida conducting over 1,000 surveys. Currently, he has joined the CE-Tech team to provide education, consultation and assist in maintaining a constant state of compliance.

Patty, a certified surgical technician, an EMT, Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management, with extensive experience as an administrator of an ambulatory surgery center responsible for all areas of staff, clinic and business management. Her expertise in regulatory compliance and project management led the surgery center through numerous successful inspections and surveys by the State of Florida and accreditation organizations. Patty conducts on-site reviews at surgery centers and office surgical practices, reviews ever-changing regulations and standards interpretation, and assists in policy formation and educational activities for Ambulatory Strategies’ clients. She has a keen interest in Life Safety and has attended several life safety seminars by NFPA, Joint Commission, and AHCA providing her with the knowledge to assist in developing policies and procedures for federal and state life safety requirements.
